STAR SYSTEM FAQ

Find answers to frequently asked questions about Actsafe Safety Association’s STAR System — our safety training and records system. If you would like to register for Actsafe’s courses and workshops, you first need to create a STAR System profile.

GENERAL

What is STAR System?
STAR is an acronym for Safety Training and Records. This Learning Management System (LMS) is used to administer, deliver, track and report online courses and instructor led training.

The key benefits to the STAR System are:
- Storage & Distribution of Online Content: the STAR System serves as a repository to store and organize training material in the form of online courses, supplemental documentation and knowledge assessments.
- Training Assignments & Requirements: Our well designed training programs can offer an array of training content based on learner profiles including; employment date, renewal cycle, job title, location, division, and more.
- Monitoring & Assessing Progress: The STAR System can provide reminders encouraging the learners to complete their training in a timely manner.
- Reporting & Analytics: Easy access to training data is important for certification, building a stronger workforce, employee satisfaction or outside auditing. STAR can permanently store training records for easy retrieval when needed. Exams and gap analysis can help identify opportunities for improvement in both the training content and the learning content effectiveness.

What is Actsafe?

Actsafe Safety Association, also known as Actsafe, is a safety association that serves BC’s motion picture and performing arts sectors by providing safety training, education, and resources for employers and workers.

Actsafe is governed by the people we represent and funded by the industries we govern. Representatives from employers and workers in theatre, dance, film, and television sit on our standing committees to ensure that the workers best interests are being served.

Employers and workers all have a role to play in planning and working safely. In BC, working safely doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. That’s where Actsafe comes in. Actsafe provides safety training specific to the motion picture and performing arts industries: first-aid training and an innovative AED rental program, workshops and seminars educating workers on the latest safety information, and on-site safety consulting to help you plan your production with safety in mind. We also provide timely and relevant information through our Twitter feed and on our Facebook page, in our quarterly printed and monthly digital newsletter, as well as showcasing entertaining and informative safety videos on our YouTube channel. And you can always find important information in our library of safety bulletins, fact sheets, and manuals on our website.

We will also deliver, to your office, our safety package filled with great documentation and resources to help you plan a safe production.

With all the resources and experience we have available, Actsafe is the organization that you can contact, and rely on, to help support a safe workplace in the motion picture and performing arts.

How do I create a profile?
1. In the top right-hand corner you will see a grey “TRAINING LOGIN” button. Hover your mouse over this button.
2. Click “SIGN UP”.

How do I login to my profile?
Where are my receipts?
1. Login to www.actsafestar.ca.
2. Click on the PURCHASES tab.
3. On the right-hand side, click on the down arrow to see what the receipt is for.
4. Click on the PDF icon next to “Receipt:” to download the receipt.

STAR notifications - Why should I keep them toggled on?

When setting up your profile you will have the option to disable STAR email notifications. The only notifications that STAR sends out are course registration confirmation emails, login information, password reset emails, theory reminder emails, certificate upload notifications, and monthly notifications of incomplete courses.

If you turn your notifications off, all of the above will then be disabled.
Why click "agree" to have records visible for the advanced search?
The Training Records Search interface will be used by industry professionals who are looking for workers with a certain skill set or to confirm that a worker has the certification required for a specific position.

In the Profile tab of your STAR profile, you will see two toggles:

‘I agree to have my training records available for advanced search so my credentials can be verified.‘

‘I provide permission for interested parties to contact me through the system to see if I am available for work.’

If you agree to have your training records available

The only information displayed through the search interface is your name, union, department, completed courses, date completed and expiration date (if applicable). This feature will allow your employer/union to see the current certificates that you hold, which could impact employment.

If you allow interested parties to contact you

Opting in to the search interface will ensure that supervisors or employers looking for someone with your skill set will find you. Opting into the contact feature will give a supervisor or employer the ability to contact you without seeing your profile or contact information.

COURSES AND WORKSHOPS

How can I access my courses?
To access your STAR account courses:
1. Log in to www.actsafestar.ca.
2. Click on the HOME tab.
3. Under the “Assigned” section you will find online courses or workshops that have not yet been started.
4. Under the “In Progress” section you will find online courses or workshops that have been started but are not yet complete.
To view upcoming STAR courses:

In the CALENDAR tab click on the grey “Courses” button in the top right corner to see the upcoming courses you are registered for.
Where can I find upcoming course and workshop dates?

From our website, hover over “Courses” at the top of the page and click on the course of interest. Then scroll down and click the COURSE DATES/REGISTER button.

From your STAR profile, click on the CALENDAR tab.

If you cannot find the course of interest please contact us through LiveChat (in the bottom right-hand corner) or call 604-733-4682.
Can I purchase a course or workshop for someone else?
Yes, you can. First login to your profile at www.actsafestar.ca then either navigate to the STORE tab, or the CALENDAR tab.

Through the STORE tab
1. Add the course of interest to your cart.
2. Click “Check Out”.
3. Select how many copies of the course you would like to purchase/process.
4. Once purchased/processed the system will ask who the training is for, select “Someone Else”.
5. Send the course code via email, or fill in the recipients information under “Option 2”.
Through the CALENDAR tab
1. Click on the course of interest and click “Book Seats”.
2. Select how many seats you would like to purchase/process.
3. Once purchased/processed the system will ask who the training is for, select “Someone Else”.
4. Send the course code via email, or fill in the recipients information under “Option 2”.
If you cannot find the course of interest please contact us.
Where is the MPIO exam?

From our website, hover over “Courses” at the top of the page and click on the Motion Picture Industry Orientation Course within the drop down menu. Then scroll down and click register under the MPIO Exam.

From your STAR profile, click on the STORE tab and select “Add to Cart” under the MPPIA Motion Picture Industry Orientation 2019 Online Exam. Then select check out to purchase the exam.
Where is the Motion Picture General Safety course?

From our website, hover over “Courses” at the top of the page and click on the Motion Picture Safety 101 – General Safety Awareness Course within the drop down menu. Then scroll down and click REGISTER.

From your STAR profile, click on the STORE tab and select “Add to Cart” under the Motion Picture Safety 101 – General Safety Awareness Course. Then select “Check Out” to acquire the course (free, no purchase necessary).
Does the Motion Picture General Safety Awareness course include WHMIS?

CERTIFICATES

Where are my certificates?
1. Login to www.actsafestar.ca.
2. Click on the HOME tab.
3. Scroll down and click open the “Completed” section.
4. Clicking on the gold emblem on the right hand side will open up the PDF of your certificate where you can download and/or print your certificate.

Where are my Leavitt Machinery certificates?
1. Login to www.actsafestar.ca.
2. Click on the HOME tab.
3. Scroll down and click open the “Completed” section.
4. Clicking on the gold emblem on the right hand side will open up the PDF of your certificate for downloading.
If you do not see your certificate please wait at least 5 business days for administrative processing before inquiring further with the Actsafe team.
How do I upload a certificate?
1. Login to www.actsafestar.ca.
2. Click on the HOME tab.
3. Scroll down and click open the “Required” section.
4. A blue “Upload” button will appear, click this button and follow the prompts to upload your certificate.
The STAR System is not restricted to Actsafe certificates only, you can upload any certificate to your STAR profile for safe keeping.
How do I send certificates to my union or employer?
1. Login to www.actsafestar.ca.
2. Click on the HOME tab.
3. Scroll down to the “Completed” section.
4. Across from “Completed” on the right-hand side you will see a “Forward Certificates” button.
5. Click the button and click the checkbox(es) for the certificate(s) would you like to send, or click “Select All” at the top, and click submit.
6. Enter the recipient(s) email address(es), edit the email subject or body, and when you are ready click send. Your certificate(s) will be attached as a PDF.
Will I get a hard copy of my certificate(s)?
