OVERVIEW
The opioid crisis in Canada resulted in 6,000 deaths recorded in 2020. Most apparent opioid toxicity deaths are among young to middle aged males. Toxicity of supply continues to be a major driver of the crisis. Knowing how to respond can save a life. This 2-hour workshop provides an understanding of what opioids are and their effects, how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer Naloxone in an emergency and using nasal spray and intramuscular injection.
Anyone with first aid certificate can pick up their free Naloxone kit at pharmacies.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
- Describe what opioids are and their effects on the body/brain.
- Identify the signs and symptoms of opioid overdose, including understanding the differences between various opioids and their effects on the body.
- Follow steps to administer naloxone (Narcan) and performing basic life support techniques like CPR if necessary.
- Explain the risk factors for opioid overdose and strategies to prevent overdose, including safe storage and disposal of opioids.
- Educate patients and the community about opioid safety.
- Appreciate the broader public health impact of opioid misuse and overdose, including strategies for harm reduction and improving community health outcomes.
