Lockout is the use of lock(s) to render machinery or equipment inoperable or to isolate an energy source in accordance with a written procedure. De-energization is the removing of energy from machinery or equipment. Equipment that is not de-energized and locked out can unexpectedly start when maintenance work is being done, which can result in serious injuries.
