Lockout

Lockout is the use of lock(s) to render machinery or equipment inoperable or to isolate an energy source in accordance with a written procedure. De-energization is the removing of energy from machinery or equipment. Equipment that is not de-energized and locked out can unexpectedly start when maintenance work is being done, which can result in serious injuries.

This WorkSafeBC booklet defines lockout, explains lockout policy and procedures, and provides guidance on compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation requirements.
