Motion Picture Industry Orientation and Exam
To acquire a certificate for Screen BC (formerly known as MPPIA) Motion Picture Industry Orientation (MPIO) Course, you must complete an e-learning module and a 4-hour facilitated session prior to taking the exam. Please follow the steps as outlined here.
OVERVIEW
Developed in partnership between Creative BC, Screen BC and industry labour organizations, this comprehensive, mandatory course provides you with the information you need to know before working on a film set. The MPIO course has recently undergone a significant update to reflect the changes industry has experienced over the past several years and to set the tone for new members of the industry to understand the values and beliefs we want to cultivate as an industry. This orientation program is just one step in a series of courses or programs which may be required by different associations, guilds and unions to make your entry into the motion picture/television industry.

STEP 1: Register for the MPIO Course
If you do not already have one, create a STAR profile and register for the MPIO course.
Once you’ve registered and paid for the MPIO course, you will be given access to the e-learning module.
STEP 2: E-Learning Module
Complete the e-learning module and note any topics or questions you would like to discuss further at the facilitated group session.

- Basic history and economic milestones in BC, some of the players involved and our hopes for the future of industry here
- Overview of the five stages of motion picture production
- Top industry expectations, the benefits and challenges of working in the motion picture industry
- Essential interpersonal, communication, and team skills required for being successful in the industry
- Fundamentals of developing and maintaining good community relations
- Common phrases and expressions heard on a motion picture set
- Set etiquette (common do’s and don’ts)
- How to read a call sheet
- Learn how to use a walkie talkie on set
- Overview of the health and safety risks while working on set
- Employer and worker safety responsibilities
- Introduction to sustainability in the industry
- Job descriptions and unions found in the motion picture industry
- Tips for finding work
STEP 3: Virtual Facilitated Group Session
You MUST complete the e-learning module, before attending the mandatory facilitated group session.
This 4-hour facilitated group session is the prerequisite for the online Motion Picture Industry Orientation Exam administered by Actsafe Safety Association.
You MUST participate in this part of the course first before taking the online exam. The exam will be made available upon completion of the facilitated group session.

STEP 4: MPIO Exam
Complete and pass the MPIO exam
The Motion Picture Industry Orientation Exam will test the knowledge learned from the e-learning module and facilitated session.
In order to pass the MPIO course, you must achieve a grade of 80% or more. You will have three chances to pass the exam.
Accessing the exam
Once you’ve completed the facilitated session and your attendance has been confirmed to Actsafe by the facilitator, your STAR profile will be updated and the exam will be made available. In the case of facilitated sessions conducted on weekdays, participants can access the exam within 24 hours. For weekend sessions, the exam will be accessible on the next business day.
The exam will be “open book”. You may refer to the student guide and any notes you have taken throughout the course.
Completion Certificate
A certificate will be issued only after you have successfully completed all required elements of the MPIO:
- E-learning module
- Virtual facilitated group session
- MPIO exam
